Pump the Brakes

Pump the brakes on fashion.

What do I mean…?

I had a problem in my 20’s. If someone said they liked my outfit, I wouldn’t want to be seen in it again. Sounds ridiculous, right? But also is relatable. Once I hit my 30s and 40s, I began to really to a deep look at what resonated with me. I no longer desire to be trendy, but more refined and classic. The French have a very limited amount of clothing in their closets, which they wear gracefully time and time again. That was my goal, that was what resonated with me. Building a closet that was sustainable, classic, feminine with rocker touches.

With the popularity of TikTok and Instagram, consumers are flooded with ads and pictures of what’s hot and trendy right now. The problem with this kind of thinking is it will only be popular RIGHT NOW. What happens when that hot trend is over? You may feel like you look ridiculous and out of fashion. Think about all that money you spend on fast fashion. It’s time to flip your thinking and approach to fashion. Buying pieces that are true to your style rather than fast-paced trends allows pieces to be in your closet for a much longer amount of time. Keep your trends to shoes, jewelry, makeup, and maybe purses. Why would you want to do that? Many reasons:
1. Save money.
2. Living YOUR style, not dictated by marketing
3. Buying higher quality because it is made to last.
4. you can still keep up with some of the trends, but in a smaller way.

Because of constantly changing trends, the appeal of fast fashion comes from wanting to always be able to afford the next new thing. One of the easiest ways to help fight fast fashion is to be smart about what you buy and where you spend your money. Buy pieces that you would get multiple uses out of. (don’t be like me in my 20s.) Try to be intentional with the clothes that will end up in your closet. The old-is-new concept is catching. Resale shops and thrift shops are great places to turn to for low prices. It can also be fun and discover something new. Try on a new style with low cost and high reward. You’ll still get that endorphin kick.
